Nestled in the Surrey countryside

"A prominent art collector who is also a fan of statement furniture hired me to transform a mansion outside of London into a comfortable, inviting home. One of her concerns involved the thread of provocative narratives in the Soviet Nonconformist artwork she owns. As we contemplated the house’s layout, by envisioning her family organically moving through it, we found perfect spots for her most important pieces. By definition, the house’s Georgian-style facade is orderly and linear, so I adopted a similar visual language when I gutted the interior. I let room sizes and openings mirror the classic proportions of the windows, exterior balustrades, and columns. Like the architecture, the décor emphasizes symmetry, so that stylistically the inside and outside share a sensibility, even though there’s nothing Georgian, or particularly English, about the furnishings we chose." Kate Hume
